Award conditions

I do not have Portuguese nationality. Can I apply for a grant?

In addition to Portuguese citizens, the following may also apply for a grant:

     - Citizens who are nationals of Member States of the European Union with the right to a permanent residence in Portugal, and their families;

     - Third country nationals:

         i) Holders of a permanent residence permit;

         ii) Beneficiaries of long-term resident status;

         iii) Coming from States with cooperation agreements providing for the application of such benefits;

         iv) Coming from States whose law, on equal terms, grants equal treatment to Portuguese students;

     - Stateless people;

     - Beneficiaries of political refugee status.

I am an international student. Can I apply for a grant?

Students who enter higher education under the international student regime do not have access to direct social support. Therefore, they are not eligible for a grant. 

This rule does not apply to students in emergency situations for humanitarian reasons, who may be awarded a grant.

The status of student in emergency situation for humanitarian reasons is granted by Higher Education Institutions, given the student's situation, in accordance with the legislation available here.

Are there special conditions when awarding grants to students in emergency situation for humanitarian reasons?

Yes, namely: 

Proportionality of he amount of the grant does not apply when the application is submitted after the general deadline.

It is mandatory to conduct an interview with the candidate.

Candidates can form single-person households and the requirement for minimum income amounts to consider the economic situation clarified does not apply.

Candidates may benefit from the awarding of an accommodation supplement.

How can I get an accommodation supplement as a student in emergency situation for humanitarian reasons?

You must comply with the conditions applicable to displaced grant holders, namely:

Apply for a place in SAS (Social Services) residency (only in public Higher Education Institutions).

If you are awarded a place, you will receive, in addition to he grant, a fixed amount of 17,5% of the social support index.

If you are not awarded a place in a residenc and rente accommodation on your o, you may still request the award of a supplement, which will crrespond to the amount actually paid for the accommodation and proven by receipt, up to a limit of 55% to 95% of the social support index, depending on the municipality in which your Institution is located. 

In either case, you must always contact the SAS or GAS of your Institution. 

Are grants awarded to students enrolled in any type of course?

Grants can be awarded for the attendance of the following courses held in higher education institutions:

  • Professional Higher Technical Courses;
  • Licenciatura courses;
  • Mestrado integrado courses;
  • Mestrado courses.

Graduates of licenciatura or mestrado courses can also be awarded a grant when, in the period of 24 months after obtaining the degree, undergoing professional training for the exercise of a profession.

I will attend a doutoramento course. Can I apply for a grant?

How many ECTS credits do I have to be enrolled in to obtain a grant?

You must be enrolled in a minimum of 30 ECTS credits, with the exceptions provided in the Regulation.

I want to study abroad. Can I apply for a grant?

Grants awarded under the Regulation are only intended for students enrolled in Portuguese higher education institutions.
