WHO ARE WE
The Directorate General for Higher Education (DGES) is a public organism under direct State administration and is subjected to the direction of the Ministry of Education, Science and Inovation (MECI).
DGES is an executive operational service of the MECI that follows the subsequent assignments:
- Assure and coordinate the rendering of information concerning the higher education system without prejudice to the competences conferred on other MECI organs and services;
- Coordinate all actions related to access and admission to higher education;
- Give all the support required by the “Agência de Avaliação e Acreditação do Ensino Superior” (Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education) with regard to the accreditation and evaluation processes of higher education;
- Monitor the needs of qualification and adequacy of higher education facilities and equipments and the social services network;
- Keep a registry of higher education cycles of study;
- Ensure the international cooperation in the scope of higher education, without prejudice to the coordination undertaken by the General Secretary and the attributions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;
- Promote the mobility of the Portuguese higher education students in the European area;
- Manage the Social Action Fund, prepare the budget proposal for higher education social services and accompany its execution and assess the quality of higher education social services, together with the Inspectorate-General of the MECI;
- Recognize of social services for private higher education social services;
- Ensure storage and preservation of fundamental documentation of closed higher education institutions, provided that, under the law, custody is not possible by the respective institution and issue the documents relating to the period of operation Institutions.
