Europe 2020 is the EU’s smart, inclusive and sustainable economic growth strategy, to increase competiveness that has set out ambitious goals to be met by 2020 in the areas of employment, R&D, climatic changes, energy and education. With the Communication “Taking Stock of the Europe 2020 Strategy for Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive Growth”, published last March, the European Commission now proposes a mid-term evaluation of the strategy to understand its impact and to adjust its priorities to the new post-crisis context. Apart from the various debates that will be held on this theme, a public consultation was launched on the 5th May that will be open until the 31st October 2014 informing the review of strategy and seeking a wide range of views on its further development.
The next Education Council to be held in December will be a decisive moment for education and training, where measures to guarantee a greater visibility of these areas in the future Europe 2020 will be discussed. The recognition of education and training systems in Europe as important drivers for growth and employment is very urgent.
The strategic framework “Education and Training 2020” is also being revised in order to adequate its instruments to the needs and requirements of the new cycle 2015-2020. The national reports on the implementation of this strategic framework and they will later integrate the Joint Interim Report by the European Commission and Council.
