The European University Institute, founded in 1972, offers advanced academic training in order to promote research excellence. The Institute is a unique centre, specializing in PhDs and post-doctorates, recruiting students from all Member-states, as well as from other parts of the world, in fields such as law, economics, history and political and social sciences. At present 23 member states participate in the Institute: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
As a contracting state to the Institute’s Convention, Portugal is represented in the High Council. The Directorate-General for Higher Education acts as a coordination point between the national representative and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education. It also disseminates information on the Institute's programmes, including the recognition, in Portugal, of the doctoral degree awarded by the institution.
