Portugal participated in NAFSA 2019 Conference and Expo (Association of International Educators), that took place May 26-May 31, 2019, in Washington D.C., with a “Study & Research in Portugal” stand. National participation, organized by the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education, was the largest until now and was composed of 20 institutions assisted by the Directorate General for Higher Education, the Foundation for Science and Technology and the Fulbright Commission. Portuguese participation in 2019 also benefited from AICEP support and had Microsoft Portugal as a technological partner.
The Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education, Prof. Dr. João Sobrinho Teixeira, visited the "Study & Research in Portugal" pavilion with the Secretary of State for Internationalization, and was also a keynote speaker at the NAFSA Conference session on Welcoming Refugee Higher Education Students: Portugal's Experience, where he presented the strategies developed by the Government and higher education institutions to host and integrate refugee students or who have undergone humanitarian crises.
On the last day, the Secretary of State for Science, Technology and Higher Education and the Secretary of State for Internationalization were speakers at the Portugal-US Higher Education and Science Forum 2019 held at the official Residence of the Portuguese Embassy in Washington. At this occasion, Study & Research in Portugal was presented and meetings were held between Portuguese and US higher education institutions.
The “Study & Research in Portugal” initiative represents a new impetus that Portugal is taking towards internationalization of knowledge, creativity and innovation namely in the context of the higher education and science and technology internationalization policy general guidelines defined in Council of Minister Resolution nº 78/2016, of the 30th of November.
